SOCCER MOVES – RANKED LISTS
U11
YOUTH SOCCER
MOVES
#1-#2 – THROW-IN
++++++++++
The
best thing a developing soccer player can do is develop dominant ball skills
needed to master the 1v1 (one verses one) game.
This
means getting thousands of touches on the ball to develop deep comfort and
control with all parts of the body and feet.
This also means mastering specific skills to keep the ball away from an
opponent, move the ball around an opponent, and take the ball away from an
opponent. As a player grows up,
dominant ball skills provide the best foundation for developing dominant
passing skills.
Younger
players can work through each move and skip those which are too difficult. Older players can work through each move and
spend time mastering those which are weak or missing from their game.
Moves #1-#2 –
Throw-In
The
top two moves are both throw-ins. I know
these moves are boring and anti-climactic for number one and two. Boring as they may be, they are logical
choices for a few reasons.
First,
you lose possession of the ball on an incorrect throw-in. This is a considerable penalty – comparable
to committing a foul and giving the other team a free kick. You can also easily lose possession of the
ball with a poor throw-in.
Second,
the throw-in can be an effective offensive tool in youth soccer. If you can put some length and distance on
the ball and place it well, the more easily you can create opportunities for
your team.
Finally,
the throw-in is 100 percent technique related.
It is quick and easy to learn and the positive benefits are
considerable. Once you understand
proper technique for throwing a soccer ball into the field of play you will
never lift that back foot again.
NOTE: Working on throw-ins will not help you
develop dominant ball skills. However,
these are easy moves to learn. Learn
them quickly and then move on to the skills needed to master the 1v1 game.
