1v1 Soccer videos are not designed to teach proper technique.

Instead, take advantage of the resources linked at the end of this post.  These resources are the best of what is out there.  These resources contain professional trainers and skilled players correctly demonstrating (often in slow-motion) the techniques you want to learn.

The purpose of 1v1 Soccer is to show parents how to modify effective soccer instructional resources for home use.  By applying these resources in the myriad of different ways demonstrated on this site, you can help your child win the 1v1 soccer battle.

Speed Dribbling involves kicking the ball far ahead of you and sprinting after it as fast as you can.  If you look up and see open field in front of you, this is by far the fastest way to make your way up the field.  Soccer University calls this move Speed Dribbling without the Ball.  I just call it Speed Dribbling.

REMINDER:  Because Speed Dribbling demands kicking the ball ahead you, the Inside Foot Ground Pass/Kick must be mastered first.  If you do not have a level of mastery over the Inside Foot Ground Pass/Kick it will be extremely difficult (if not impossible) to become skilled in Speed Dribbling.

Speed Dribbling involves kicking the ball ahead and sprinting after it.  How can you effectively kick a ball ahead of you if you don’t know correct technique for kicking a ball?  It seems simple, but the reality is a significant percentage of youth players are unable to properly kick or pass a soccer ball.  While other kicks would also be appropriate, this is the easiest kick to learn and control.

Chop Dribbling involves quick, choppy steps and touching the ball with every step.  This is the most controlled type of dribbling and is usually utilized in a crowded area of the field while still allowing you to move the ball forward.

Chop Dribbling is difficult to master and takes lots of practice.  But the practice is worth it.  Practicing this dribbling technique allows you to quickly get hundreds and even thousands of touches on the ball.  These touches help you develop confidence and comfort with the ball at your foot.  In addition, mastering the Chop Dribble will provide a foundation upon which you can quickly learn other dribbling and ball control techniques.

Controlled Dribbling involves moving the ball down the field as quickly as possible while using the same foot to touch the ball every stride.  The part of the foot that touches the ball – laces, inside foot, outside foot – is irrelevant.  The idea is to get the same foot on the ball in whatever way is most appropriate.  Controlled Dribbling provides a nice balance of speed and control.

Fast Dribbling involves kicking the ball about 3-5 paces ahead of you and then sprinting after it.  Keeping the ball closer to you results in slightly less speed than Speed Dribbling, but provides slightly more control of the ball.  Soccer University calls this move Speed Dribbling with the Ball.  I renamed this technique Fast Dribbling.

REMINDER:  Because Fast Dribbling demands kicking the ball ahead you, the Inside Foot Ground Pass/Kick must be mastered first.  If you do not have a level of mastery over the Inside Foot Ground Pass/Kick it will be extremely difficult (if not impossible) to become skilled in Fast Dribbling.

MOVES #5-#10 – DRIBBLING

++++++++++

The best thing a developing soccer player can do is develop dominant ball skills needed to master the 1v1 (one verses one) game.

This means getting thousands of touches on the ball to develop deep comfort and control with all parts of the body and feet.  This also means mastering specific skills to keep the ball away from an opponent, move the ball around an opponent, and take the ball away from an opponent.  As a player grows up, dominant ball skills provide the best foundation for developing dominant passing skills.

Younger players can work through each move and skip those which are too difficult.  Older players can work through each move and spend time mastering those which are weak or missing from their game.

Moves #5-#10 – Dribbling
1st Touch + DRIBBLING + Moves + Physicality + Ball Control = BALL DOMINANCE

Now we get to the fun stuff – DRIBBLING.  Dribbling is the primary component needed to develop command of a soccer ball.  This is where 1v1 excellence begins.

The youngest ages of youth soccer (U6 – U9) are all about Speed Dribbling and Fast Dribbling.  Get the ball at your foot, punch it forward, and sprint after it.  Chop Dribbling will let you maintain possession and move into the best position to pass or score in front of a crowded goal box.  Controlled Dribbling will let you quickly move the ball down a barely open sideline.

Do you have a U6 - U12 coach telling you to pass the ball all the time?  Find a new coach.

Every player should have multiple opportunities to first dribble the ball and try to beat at least one opponent 1v1 before passing.  This is how you develop creativity and confidence with the ball.  If you are faced with two or more defenders, it is appropriate to pass.  But there is just one defender in front of you – go for it.

Especially use scrimmages, small-sided-games, and free-play during training to practice your dribbling.  This is the perfect time to do it since there are no penalties for losing the ball.

Yes, there is a place for passing even in the youngest ages of soccer, but it should not be a primary area of emphasis.  The exception would be truly exceptional players or teams that have already mastered ball dominance.
And if you are a defender and your coach doesn’t want you dribbling, then request to spend half your minutes each game playing forward and use the time to be creative and dribble!

CUSTOM INDOOR TRAINING SESSION

YOUTH SOCCER

1ST TOUCH 1

++++++++++

A strong 1st Touch means being able to place the ball where you want it after receiving it.  Mastery of 1st Touch includes being in control over two variables when the soccer ball touches your foot.

Direction – You should be able to guide the ball off your foot in the exact direction you want it to go.

Weight – This is the pace at which the ball leaves your foot.  You should be able to control how far the ball rolls (1 foot, 3 feet, 5 feet, 10 feet, etc.) in the direction you want it to go.

The Inside Foot Stationary Touch is the most basic and important 1st Touch move.  It involves using the inside of your foot to bring a moving ball to a stop.  When you first learn to pass and receive a soccer ball, this is where you start.  It is a foundational move and should be mastered at an early age.

A Forward Touch always means moving the ball towards the goal.  If possible, your 1st Touch of the ball should move the ball towards the opponent’s goal.  Your first thought should be to attack, to advance the ball, to put pressure on the defense.

An Inside Foot Forward Touch means the ball is moving directly towards you and your 1st Touch sends the ball back in the opposite direction towards your opponent’s goal.

An Inside Foot Angle Forward Touch means the ball is approaching you at an angle and you use your 1st Touch to send the ball towards your opponent’s goal.  This is a more complicated touch because you must angle your receiving foot properly to get the ball to move in the direction you want it to.

A Back To Goal Inside Foot Side-On Touch & Turn is the most basic way to make a 180 degree turn as you receive the ball and then advance the ball towards your opponent’s goal.  The idea here is that when the ball is passed to you or rolls to you, your back is towards your opponent’s goal.  With a single touch you can immediately move from having your back to your opponent’s goal to facing your opponent’s goal.

Move #4 – 1st Touch
1ST TOUCH + Dribbling + Moves + Physicality + Ball Control = BALL DOMINANCE

I am a huge fan of dribbling.  But what good is it to be skilled at dribbling if you can never get the ball?  You can’t dribble the ball unless you can first receive the ball.

The Inside Foot Stationary Touch is the most basic way to receive a soccer ball.  After the ball is sitting nicely on either foot then you can be off to the races using the dribbling skills you will be learning in the next set of moves.

REMINDER:  Nearly all of the foundational 1st Touch moves will benefit from mastery of the Inside Foot Ground Pass/Kick.  Proper technique for receiving a soccer ball is very similar to proper technique for kicking a ball.  If you are able to strike a ball correctly using the Inside Foot you will quickly be able to learn all of the 1st Touch techniques utilizing the Inside Foot.  If you do not have a level of mastery over the Inside Foot Ground Pass/Kick it will be extremely difficult (if not impossible) to become skilled in 1st Touch.
