MOVES #44-#49 – 1ST TOUCH

++++++++++

The best thing a developing soccer player can do is develop dominant ball skills needed to master the 1v1 (one verses one) game.

This means getting thousands of touches on the ball to develop deep comfort and control with all parts of the body and feet.  This also means mastering specific skills to keep the ball away from an opponent, move the ball around an opponent, and take the ball away from an opponent.  As a player grows up, dominant ball skills provide the best foundation for developing dominant passing skills.

Younger players can work through each move and skip those which are too difficult.  Older players can work through each move and spend time mastering those which are weak or missing from their game.

Moves #44 - #49 – 1st Touch
1ST TOUCH + Dribbling + Moves + Physicality + Ball Control = BALL DOMINANCE

A skilled player rarely receives the ball and brings it to a dead stop.  This provides a defender too much opportunity to close down on you and tackle the ball.  Instead, a skilled player reviews the field as the ball is arriving and uses a strong 1st Touch to move the ball to a location and at a pace which provides maximum strategic value.

At a basic level, a strong 1st Touch moves the ball away from pressure and into an open area of the field.

In particular, the 1st Touch moves listed below are all offensive.  If there is open field in front of you these touches will move the ball quickly towards the opponent’s goal.

When layered with dribbling and moves, a strong 1st Touch will take your ability to dominate the ball and win 1v1 battles to new level.

Moves #41 - #43 – Kicking/Passing
One Touch Passing is not very common in youth soccer.  One Touch Passing is a complicated skill that you often don’t see used regularly in games until high school.

So if this is not a skill you are going to use in a game at this age, then why is it on this list at all, let alone rated so high?  There are a couple of reasons.

The primary benefit in training the Inside Foot One Touch Ground Kick/Pass is it provides a fantastic foundation for developing a strong 1st Touch.  A strong 1st Touch is a core element for developing ball dominance.

A second benefit is the Inside Foot One Touch Ground Kick/Pass provides a fantastic foundation for every other type of kick using the inside foot.

Best U10 Youth Soccer Moves | #32-#34 – Defending & Tackling

Moves #32 - #34 – Defending & Tackling
A fast and skilled opponent is dribbling right at you with the ball at their foot – what do you do?  No need to panic.  Just take an Angled Approach and use your body to separate them from the ball.

Angled Approach and Separation – this is the key to dominating the 1v1 defensive game.

Two techniques – it’s that simple.

If you can master Angled Approach & Separation you can take the ball away from even an athletic and/or skilled offensive opponent.

The crazy thing is that while these two techniques are so effective they are often not taught.  Many soccer clubs either neglect teaching defense and tackling altogether, or they teach outdated and less effective techniques.

One commonly taught tackle I would especially avoid is the Block Tackle.  A skilled offensive player will beat you almost every time if you stab at the ball with your foot, even if you use proper technique.

After you’ve learned Angled Approach & Separation, Pressure Defending is the icing on the cake.  It is an additional defensive technique which will make it even more difficult for opponents to beat you.

Win the 1v1 soccer battle not just offensively, but defensively as well.

Best U10 Youth Soccer Moves | #35-#40 – Shielding/Physicality

MOVES #35-#40 – SHIELDING/PHYSICALITY

++++++++++

Moves #35 - #40 – Shielding / Physicality
1st Touch + Dribbling + Moves + PHYSICALITY + Ball Control = BALL DOMINANCE

Physicality is a part of almost every sport – football, basketball, and soccer.  Physicality can give you an edge over your opponent.  It evens the playing field when your opponent is fundamentally and/or athletically superior.

There are only a handful of techniques and drills which teach physicality, so you may as well learn them early and practice them often.

Shielding allows you the ability to keep possession of the ball under heavy pressure.  If you are trapped or in a tight spot, unable to beat an opponent 1v1, and without a passing lane, using your body to protect or “shield” the ball from an opponent can buy you extra time for your teammates to help you out.

Another benefit to shielding is that it teaches Physicality.  It is impossible to effectively protect a soccer ball without fully and completely putting a body on an opponent who is trying to take it from you.

There are very few drills in this list of Top Soccer Moves, but these two Keep Away drills are a great way to both teach shielding, aggression, and physical play.  Even youth who are not naturally aggressive have no choice but to step it up in these drills.

Once you have developed comfort shielding the ball, the next step is to add moves and cuts into the mix.  When an opponent is applying heavy pressure and likely pushing you while you are shieling it is easy to use their momentum against them.  A simple Pull Back or Outside Cut will allow you to spin away from their pressure and move up field.

Shielding + Pull Back or Outside Cut is extremely effective.  Invest some time into developing these techniques and you will see immediate payoff.

As a final thought, a key element in soccer is keeping possession of the ball.  Once you win the ball you don’t want to give it back to the other team.  The ability to shield is one more tool in your belt which will enable you to dominate the ball and win the 1v1 soccer battle.
