MOVES #23-#29 – KICKING/PASSING

+++++++++++

The best thing a developing soccer player can do is develop dominant ball skills needed to master the 1v1 (one verses one) game.

This means getting thousands of touches on the ball to develop deep comfort and control with all parts of the body and feet.  This also means mastering specific skills to keep the ball away from an opponent, move the ball around an opponent, and take the ball away from an opponent.  As a player grows up, dominant ball skills provide the best foundation for developing dominant passing skills.

Younger players can work through each move and skip those which are too difficult.  Older players can work through each move and spend time mastering those which are weak or missing from their game.

Moves #23 - #29 – Kicking / Passing
All of these moves involve kicking the ball with the Inside Foot.  These are the easiest kicks to learn, can generate considerable power if necessary, provide maximum control, and create the ability to kick a moving ball incoming from various angles.

An added benefit is that a many of these kicks are also finishing moves.  On the whole, spending time working on finishing moves is not an effective use of time in youth soccer, but these moves are the exception.  Mastering all of these kicks will provide a great foundation for becoming a skilled goal scorer.

1v1 Soccer videos are not designed to teach proper technique.

Instead, take advantage of the resources linked at the end of this post.  These resources are the best of what is out there.  These resources contain professional trainers and skilled players correctly demonstrating (often in slow-motion) the techniques you want to learn.

The purpose of 1v1 Soccer is to show parents how to modify effective soccer instructional resources for home use.  By applying these resources in the myriad of different ways demonstrated on this site, you can help your child win the 1v1 soccer battle.

There are three different categories of soccer moves.

Change of Direction moves are designed to move you away from pressure and into open areas of the field.  Sudden changes of direction will make you unpredictable, difficult to defend, and allow you to create space for yourself.  Changing direction also helps find new openings and change your options.

Stop & Start moves are designed to help you lose an opponent who is applying heavy pressure.  Stop and Start moves allow you to freeze your opponent for just an instant, allowing you to accelerate into the space where you want to move.  These moves allow you to continue moving in the same direction.  They do not demand that you stop and move in a different direction like Change of Direction moves do.

Fake & Feint moves are designed to help you beat an opponent who is facing you.  Most of these moves are built around misdirection.  You move your body one way while the ball moves another way.  An opponent typically follows your body rather than the ball, giving you the space you need to move around them.

One move I want to comment on below is The “V”.  There are three different versions of The “V” and all three are demonstrated at the same time in the Soccer University DVD series.  It can be confusing if you aren’t aware of the different versions of this move.  The most effective version of The “V” involves using one foot instead of two.

A couple other moves to note are the Fake & Take and the Pull Push Behind.  Make Your Move by Coerver Coaching calls the Fake & Take the Side Step.  And Soccer University calls the Pull Push Behind the “L” Pull Behind.

Moves #11 - #22 – Moves
1st Touch + Dribbling + MOVES + Physicality + Ball Control = BALL DOMINANCE

Forget the complicated and crazy moves you see on Youtube and instead focus on the basics.  These moves aren’t flashy, but they are effective.

Make them your bread and butter.  Practice them repeatedly until you can execute them in a game without thinking about it.  When combined with skilled dribbling, mastery of these moves will take your 1v1 skills to a new level.

Dribble at an opponent and do a simple Double Touch right around him.  When a defender attempts a tackle pull The “V” and move away.

And don’t forget the Inside Cut and Outside Cut.  These are the most basic moves in soccer, but also the most effective.  Watch the greatest soccer players in the world and you will see the Inside and Outside Cut used multiple times through a match.

NOTE:  The first six moves listed below are all versions of the Inside and Outside Cut.  The more repetition and practice of these moves the better.

Only after you have mastered these twelve moves should you move on to the more complicated (and fancy) moves ranked lower on this list.
